Skin Care Routine: What goes on first and why?

The order you put things on matters more than most people think. A serum put on after moisturizer mostly just sits on top and never gets into your skin. And using two strong products on the same night usually leaves your face red and irritated instead of better. So before you buy anything else, get the order right.

You also don't need everything. A face wash and a moisturizer is a full routine by itself. You can add the rest over time.

Face

00 · Remove

If you wore sunscreen or concealer that day, start your night routine with the Sunscreen + Makeup Remover. Face wash alone doesn't always get it all off, and whatever's left clogs up everything you put on after. In the morning, skip this step.

01 · Wash

Pick your face wash based on how your skin acts. If it feels tight or dry after you wash it, use the Hydrating Facial Cleanser. If your face gets shiny or greasy during the day, use the Kale Face Cleanser. You can use the Konjac Sponge with either one when you want a deeper clean.

02 · Tone/Exfoliate

This is the step where people can sometimes overdo it. The Mild Toning Elixir is gentle, so it's fine every day. The Glycolic Acid Serum and the Mint Exfoliating Facial Polish clear away dead, rough skin, but they're strong, so two or three nights a week is enough. The Brightening Glow Mask is once or twice a week. Only use one of these per night.

03 · Treat

The Hyaluronic Acid Serum keeps your skin hydrated. Use it morning and night, right after toning/exfoliating while your face is still a little damp. If you choose not to do step 02, it can be used after washing. The Collagen + Retinol Serum smooths out texture over time, but it only goes on at night. If you've never used it before, start every other night so your skin can get used to it.

04 · Eyes

At night, tap a small amount of the De-puffing Under-eye Cream under each eye with your ring finger. You only need a little.

05 · Moisturize

Moisturizer always goes last because it locks in everything under it. If your skin gets oily, use the Oil-Free Daily Moisturizer. If your skin leans more dry or gets red and irritated easily, use the Barrier Repair Soothing Emulsion. In the morning, put sunscreen on after.

One rule to remember: the retinol serum, the glycolic serum, and the polish or mask should never go on the same night. Together, they're too much for your skin.
